Big Scholarships for College are Unusual

Big Scholarship for College

Big Scholarships

When you think about college scholarships for yourself, you are probably hoping for some big scholarships – or those that award large scholarship sums of money. Unfortunately, most of the scholarships that you will be eligible for and win are small awards. This doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t know about and apply for the really large scholarships if you qualify. These are unusual scholarships because the awards are so large and definitely not the norm when it comes to student scholarship aid. Less then 1% of students will be able to qualify and win a big scholarship.

First you need to understand that big college scholarships come from a wide range of sources. Many colleges offer their own unusual scholarships, and some colleges offer scholarships that are worth more than other colleges. The biggest scholarships offered by colleges will come through the departments. For example, if you are an English Major, you need to seek out large scholarships that are available through the English Department at the college that you attend. Most of these unusually large scholarships are not available for entering freshmen, because you have to prove your value to the department head to be eligible.

The next place you need to turn to for large scholarships is corporations. Because corporations typically have more funds available than small businesses, they can offer larger scholarship awards – and they offer these big scholarship awards to keep the publics opinion of their company fairly high. People tend to not like big corporations that make lots of profit without reinvesting at least a portion of that profit back into communities.

Examples of corporate scholarships that are quite large include a $25,000 Target scholarship;  $25,000 Discover Card scholarship; $20,000 Coca Cola scholarship, a full ride Rhodes Scholarship $20,000 Dell scholarship and the massive Robert Byrd Scholarship Program. This is just a small sampling of the large scholarships that are available through big corporations. Each corporation will have their own eligibility requirements, and their own selection process.

While you are seeking large college scholarships, make sure that you keep your eyes open for fellowships as well. Fellowships award stipends – and you can typically spend your stipend in anyway that you wish. These stipends can be as little as a few thousand dollars, or as high as $45,000. Of course, there will be other requirements that you must fulfill as the winner of a fellowship, such as research work.

It is vital that you understand that the unusually big scholarships are typically not available to average students. In most cases, you must possess some special skill, score very high academically, show true athletic promise, or prove yourself to be extremely civic minded. If none of this applies to you, your search for large scholarship awards may be futile, and you may be better off spending your time applying for numerous smaller obscure scholarships. Many community based local scholarships are quite large, but again you must have shown your value to your community and meet other requirements in order to be considered.

Overall, some of the largest scholarship awards are from athletic scholarships. These big scholarships typically offer the student what we call a ‘full ride.’ This means that the entire cost of the student’s education is covered along with living expense and book. These large scholarships are typically made through the college that the student will be attending – and playing sports for. If getting big scholarships interests you the most consider the above and see if you may fit the criteria to apply.

The Big 33 Scholarship is Unusual and Large

Big 33 Scholarship

Big33Scholarship

Are you looking for funds to help pay for your college education? Even if you are not a football player, you need to be aware of the Big 33 Scholarship a large and unusual scholarship program which is funded by the Annual Big 33 Football Classic and other sponsors of the program. It’s hard to believe that you could win this Big scholarship without actually being an athlete, but you definitely can. This is why it’s an unusual scholarship and at the same time an extremely large scholarship in terms of the number of Big 33 scholarships awarded every year.

The Big 33 has given away approximately $3,900,000 since it started awarding Big scholarships in 1985. The mission of the organization is to produce the best possible high school football game in the United States and to showcase the talents of students and communities, and to raise funds for academic scholarships and other charitable activities. Winners of the Big 33 scholarships are invited to attend the game and the week long festivities that are centered on the game.

Although the Big 33 has only been awarding these unusual scholarships since 1985, it has actually existed for more than fifty years. The game has been played since 1957, and it features the best high school football players in Ohio and Pennsylvania. It is considered to be the Super Bowl of High School Football. Many well known NFL stars have played in the game, as high school students, including Tony Dorsett, Orlando Pace, Joe Montana, and Joe Namath. In every Super Bowl game, there has been at least one Big 33 Alumnus member playing, which says a great deal about the importance of this game from a professional standpoint.

The game occurs in June or July each year, and the activities include cheerleading exhibitions, the Big scholarship awards ceremony, youth clinics, visits to local hospitals by the players, and numerous other activities. The game is played in Pennsylvania, and the players from Ohio stay with families who agree to be host families. It is the proceeds of the game and other fund raising activities and donations that fund the Big 33 college scholarship program.

In order to be eligible for the Big 33 Scholarship, you must be a well rounded student, showing that you have academic excellence, and that you are involved in extracurricular activities. You must also be a high school senior enrolled in a school in Ohio or Pennsylvania, but the school can be private or public as long as it is accredited. Additionally, you must have a GPA of at least 2.0 and you must plan to attend college at an accredited institution. Although the Big 33 scholarship is awarded by a football organization, this is not an athletic scholarship, and you do not have to be an athlete to apply or to win the award. You must also plan to be a full time student and a citizen of the United States.

The Big 33 Scholarship Foundation awards a minimum of 150 scholarships each year, with a maximum of 200 scholarships, but last year, 214 scholarships were awarded. The smallest award is $500, and the largest scholarship award amount is $4500. If your a high school senior this is one large and unusual scholarship that could be an easy scholarship to win simply because so many are doled out each year. Don’t get passed up and apply if you fit the criteria. For more information go to the Big 33 Scholarship program. The application process opens in October, and ends in February each year.

Unusual Scholarships for Twins – Siblings & Multiples

Unusual Scholarships for Twins Multiples & Siblings

Scholarships for Twins

College costs a great deal of money and for parents of twins, the cost may be completely out of reach. This is why it is important for those parents to learn about some unusual scholarships for twins, siblings & multiples. Twins have numerous scholarship opportunities that other people simply are not eligible for. This means that the only other competition for these college twin scholarships is other sets of twins. This substancially narrows the competition down.

Start by considering colleges that offer special rates for twins – more commonly referred to as scholarships for multiple students or scholarships for siblings within the same family. While these are not really college scholarships for twins, these programs can lower the cost of the total tuition for twins by anywhere from $500 to $2000 – which is about the same as winning a twin scholarship. Schools that offer these special tuition programs include Wilson College, Sterling College, Morris Brown College, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Randolph-Macon Women’s College, Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College, George Washington University, Carl Albert College, and Lake Erie College.

Some colleges will even offer a discount of 50% for one of the twins, if both are attending the same college (just as good as scholarships for twins or multiple students or scholarships for siblings). This is a huge savings, and one that should definitely be considered when selecting the college that you will attend. Usually, the colleges that make this type of offer will be smaller schools, as opposed to larger state universities. Some colleges will offer free or discounted housing to one or both twins instead of offering a reduction in tuition. Make sure that you call the colleges that you are considering to find out what is offered to twins in the way of college tuition and housing.

Some colleges also offer unusual scholarships for twins, based on academic merit. In this instance, you must attend a specific college, be a twin, and have excellent grades or other merits. In some cases, only one twin has to be attending the school in order to be eligible, and in other cases both twins must attend, and both twins must be eligible in order to apply.

A few colleges offer unfamiliar college scholarships for twins and/or multiples. Parents of twins must be happy with this sibling scholarship because they can get a (2) for (2) on this multiples scholarship program. Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti Michigan is one such college which does offer scholarships for twins. Known as a college which produces great teachers, their twin scholarship is called The Furlotte Twins Endowed Scholarship.

If you are a parent of twins, make sure that you join as many organizations designed for parents of multiples as possible. Many of these organizations have twin college scholarship opportunities, and these awards are typically made to members – or the twins of members. The Illinois Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs, Inc. is one example of a club that offers these unique scholarships for twins. Most states have a Mothers of Twins or Mothers of Multiples Club.

Naturally, you must realize that the number of twin scholarships that are available specifically for twins are very few – and this makes them very competitive, since there are many sets of twins in the world. What this means is that first, you need to be a top runner for these awards by showing that you have what it takes academically and that you have contributed to your community in a positive way, through civic activities. Additionally, it is wise to apply for all of the financial assistance that you can get, and for each twin to apply for as many scholarships and grants that they may be eligible for such as Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work Study (FWS) Programs or FSEOG Grants, instead of just depending on these unusual scholarships for twins, siblings and multiple student discounts.

Do not assume, however, that because you are disabled you have a better chance of winning these disability scholarships. Your talents as they relate to the selection criteria will be the only thing that is considered, which is why you need to apply for the little known special needs scholarships as well. If you have more than one disability, make sure that you seek out unknown scholarship opportunities for each disability that you have. For example, if you are hearing impaired and wheelchair bound, you qualify for scholarships designed for both groups.

Going to their website does no good in locating an Apple college scholarship other then the Apple Scholars Program. They are almost elusive because they seem to be intertwined with other scholarship programs and sometimes they will discontinue a particular Apple scholarship program and it is no longer available. They must have at least 70 different ones that you can apply for. There are some that are available to anyone in the United States but then there are some that are only available in the states where Apple corporations are. In order to find the ones that are best for you and find the deadlines and requirements you must search for Apple scholarships to see what new Apple scholarship program is available at that time and it will be posted on the internet.

The above were all existing Apple scholarship programs as of the date of the writing of this article, but some may no longer be available. It is a bit unusual that such a large corporation handles their educational support for college students this way but then again Apple has always been one to distance themselves from the crowd and take their own unique road in doing things.

The Unknown Elks Scholarship Programs

Elks National Scholarship

Elks National Scholarship

The Elks Scholarship awards have three different types of Elks National Scholarship Plans which are offered through the Elks National Foundation. They tend to be unknown scholarships because most people don’t associate the Elks Lodge with scholarships. Besides being one of the largest financial supporters of a college education you may be asking yourself “but who are the Elks and what are they all about”?

The Elks is a multi faceted organization dedicated to one goal, that of the betterment of our communities. There are few more worthy ways to better our future than to invest in the education of our future leaders and to that end the Elks National Foundation grants over 3.60 million dollars in Elks Scholarships across the nation per year. Even though the Elks National scholarships are distributed nationally all applications and funds go through the local Elks lodge making the process more personal and geared to the needs of the youth of the community.

The Elks were founded on the ideal of service to mankind. In a 1928 speech Elks President John F. Malley envisioned a mighty army for good united to serve mankind. Elks achieve this by investing in their communities. They invest time, money, effort and their focus is diverse. Youth of course are the promise of tomorrow and volunteers from the local, state and national level invest their time to further that dream. Community service, volunteering and furthering the goals of the group are a strong focus of all Elks members.

The Elks Scholarships

The Legacy Scholarships by the Elks benefit students of current Elk members in good standing and these scholarships vary in size. Normally up to 250 $4,000 ($1,000 per year for 4 years) scholarships are awarded annually for Legacy Elks scholarships. You can apply from September 1st of every year.

The Most Valuable Student Scholarships sponsored by the Elks award 500 scholarships across the nation ranging in amounts of $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year over a four year period and are for students who excel both in character, charity and scholastic ability. You can apply September 1st online every year. You do not have to be related to a member of the Elks to apply for this Elk scholarship.

Emergency Educational Grants from the Elks are available to children of deceased or fully disabled Elks Members. These awrds are from $1,000 to $3,000 yearly and they are renewable. You can apply anytime from July 1st to December 31st.

The two below Elk sponsored unknown scholarships are also offerred to Scouts and can be applied to at your local Elk club lodge. They are restrictive in nature in that only scouts who have reached the highest level of scouting possible can only apply.

The Elks National Foundation Scholarship awards The Elks Eagle Scout Scholarships which are (4) $8,000 & (4) $4,000 scholarships. You must apply before February 28th. This Elks lodge scholarship is for those scouts who have reached an ‘eagle scout’ status to apply only. Must be a high school senior to apply.

The Elks Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarships are for those girl scouts who have reached the the highest ranking possible in Girl Scouting – The Gold Award. There will be (8) $6,000 Elk club scholarship awards. Must be a high school senior to apply.

The Elks Scholarship Programs are for undergraduate study only. All scholarship funds are paid directly to the school except in certain conditions. If the scholarship funds are to be used against attendance expenses such as dorm rooms the student must have the University or college issue a certificate of attendance and that must be forwarded to the Chicago Elks, a check will then be issued to the school for credit for the student. All scholarship awards from Elks National Scholarship will also come with a certificate of award, except for the Emergency Educational Grants. You must be a high school senior to apply for the Most Valuable Student Scholarships and the Legacy Elks Scholarships. To apply to the Emergency Educational Grants Elk Scholarship you must be under the age of 23. It’s definitely worth becoming a member of the Elks even if you are not awarded an Elks Club Scholarship because of the many usefull benefits which this club offers for families. To read more about joining go to the Elks Club.

Elks Scholarship checks are generally issued through the months of June July and August. Applications for an Elks scholarship must be made directly through the local Elks lodge and it will be forwarded to the national office to be evaluated.

Information concerning applications for the unknown Elks Scholarships can be obtained through the local Elks chapter or for more information about the Elks Scholarship programs an email can be sent to scholarship@elks.org. High school counselors or financial aide counselors at college will also have information concerning Elks Scholarship applications and requirements.

Some, however, will only require you to take at least one computer science related course, such as the Google Anita Borg First Years Scholarship Program. Google scholarships are heavily directed in supporting women and minorities going into the computer technology related fields of study. Since this is exactly what Google is all about – computer science, then it makes sense that they would want to lend support to their industry – and what better way to do it? Here is a breakdown of the Google college scholarship programs and what they offer.

Google Academic Scholarships

The Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship offers numerous Google scholarships to students in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The award amount for all of these scholarships is $10,000. These Google college scholarships are available for computer science related students who are in their senior year of an undergraduate program, or in a graduate program, although the Anita Borg First Years program is available to those who are finishing high school, and about to enter college.

The Google AISES Scholarship is offered in partnership with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and is also awarded in the amount of $10,000. Students who apply must be undergraduates or in graduate school, working towards a degree in computer science or a related field.

Google has two scholarships available for students with disabilities. These include the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities and the Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. The Europe scholarship is awarded in the amount of 7000 pounds and the Google Lime Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $10,000. There is no indication as to how many of these scholarships are awarded each year, but multiple awards are made. For either of these scholarships, the student must be studying computer science, and must be disabled to apply.

The Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship is intended for computer science students, who are Hispanic. It is awarded in the amount of $10,000. Another Google minority scholarship is the Google United Negro College Fund. It is available for African Americans who are studying computer science, also awarded in the amount of $10,000. As with other Google Scholarships, no indication is given as to how many of these are awarded, although multiple awards are made each year.

Their is also the Google Zawadi Scholarship as well offered for African women who were pursuing an education in computer science at the leading universities in Africa. A Google mentor is assigned to winners to offer support in their studies. When selecting the winners of this Google scholarship financial need is required and applicants must have a strong academic background, display leadership skills and must have been involved with notable outside activities that can be documented.

Google Conference Travel Scholarships

Aside from all of these above Academic Scholarships, Google also offers what they call Conference Travel Scholarships where Google will award winners with covering the cost of travel to attend one of the many Google conferences or GooglePlex retreats. They include the Google Women of Color Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference; awarded to women of color students in the US and internationally, the Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference which is awarded to students outside the US, and the Google Travel Scholarship for the AISES National Conference awarded to American Indian Science and Engineering Society for AISES students only.
