Unusual VLIR Scholarship Programs
VLIR Scholarship

Ever heard of the unique VLIR scholarship? VLIR is an acronym for Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad – The Flemish Inter University Council. The Belgium’s Directorate-General for Developmental Cooperation awards government scholarships to students from less developed countries. They can study in any one of 15 International Course Programs or choose any of the 6 available International Training Programs. These VLIR UOS scholarship awards target persons in responsibility in the community, school or social organizations within their developing countries and those pursuing Master’s qualifications with a suitable academic history. The VLIR scholarship program is intended to cover all related expenses for the student to study in Flanders, Belgium.

The Kingdom of Belgium is comprized of a federal state having (3) communities – Flemish, French & German. along with (3) regions Flanders, Wallonia & Brussels Capital. Education has gained its own independence and as a result the educational system in Flanders, Belgium is entirely different to that of Wallonia. One out of ten people in Belgium are a foreign national. Belgium is home to the worldwide organizations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union (EU).

There are a maximum of 180 such VLIR scholarships awarded each year for first year International Course Program students. There are 70 possible VLIR UOS scholarships for International Training Program scholarships.

Included within the 2010 VLIR ITP (International Training Program) curriculum are courses such as Beekeeping for alleviation of poverty, Governing for development, ITP training in food safety and quality assurance, Political Economy of the Great Lakes, Scientific and Technical Information Management for Libraries.

The intent of the VLIR Scholarship Program is to disseminate new techniques among persons in responsibility in developing countries as well as to aid in mutual understanding and education of those who will become the future of those countries. The hope is that the assistance will result in better understanding and mutually beneficial long-term associations and partnerships. Although the VLIR Scholarship programs are targeted toward students in developing countries they are open to any person wishing to apply that meets the scholastic requirements.

The applicant for a VLIR Scholarship should have a strong academic requirement that meets the specification of the institution at which they will be studying. They should also be below the age of 35 years. Residents of a developing country are the target population but the VLIR scholarship application process is open to any interested parties. Persons applying for a VLIR UOS scholarship must also be proficient in reading and writing English. Proficiency in English may be proven with a certificate of equivalency if formal instruction has not been undertaken.

The VLIR scholarships differ in parts from any scholarships in that there are multiple schools involved and that different schools host different programs of study. The student must meet both the unique scholarship requirements of the VLIR scholarship program as well as the admission requirements of the individual school.

These Belgium scholarships are awarded by a committee composed of the host school, and staff of the VLIR UOS scholarship committee. Scholarship approval is based on the opinions of both factions of the committee. Scholarship applications for the VLIR UOS scholarship for 2011 can be submitted starting Oct 1st to February 1st every year. The steps are as follows. Apply on the VLIR scholarship website and complete the pre-screening application. You will receive a return email with a link for the host university where you must apply at their site. You will then send transcripts and a printed copy of your application form via postal mail to the address given you.

The VLIR Scholarship Programs are truly a unique study abroad scholarship program in every sense of the word to which it has no equal. It is best suited only for those individuals who welcome this type of truly unique and one of a kind college experience and who happens to meet the VLIR scholarship criteria.

Most Government Scholarships are Unique

Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are available though they tend to represent a smaller total of scholarships.

Government Scholarships

The image of what a standard scholarship represents in the United States is typically idealized in the image of a private foundation or group offering money based on merit for various students with differing eligibility requirements. Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are also available, though they tend to represent a smaller total of the overall little known about scholarship pool. These federal government scholarships which are normally offered on a competitive basis are often given out by individual departments or groups at the federal level. It is very common for these government college scholarships to be offered to graduate students, but there are also some programs available to undergraduates as well. The reason that these programs are often given out to specifically graduate students relates to the fact that the US government is often interested in encouraging specialized development for individuals who may be interested in employment with the government after graduation. As these are often awarded on a competitive basis, students interested in government scholarships should be prepared to present themselves in the best light possible, scoring high in academic material and, especially for graduate students, be able to present a clear idea of their overall academic goals.

Since these unheard about government scholarships for students are given out by individual departments at the federal level, students should be able to identify potential sources of funding by being able to identify their career interests. For instance, those interested atmospheric or oceanic sciences should look at the national oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for access to gov scholarships which may apply to them.

Considering NOAA, students interested in a government scholarship which focuses on atmospheric or oceanic sciences should be pleased to know that the annual Ernest F. Hollings scholarship returns in 2011. Unlike many federal government scholarships, the Ernest F Hollings program is available primarily to undergraduates. An exceptional program, this fed gov scholarship gave out over 100 awards in 2010 of up to $8,000 as well as making available internships for interested students at NOAA during breaks from school. In order to be eligible for this government scholarship an applicant must be an US citizen while maintaining a full-time status at an accredited university in the US. The cumulative grade point average for all completed courses must be at a minimum 3.0 and all applicants must be majoring in a program related to atmospheric or oceanic studies. Applications for this program are made available on October 1 of every year and the deadline for all materials is February 4.

An excellent government scholarship for college through the Department of Homeland Security exists for students who are interested in studying a field related to the DHS’s related fields of studies. Broadly speaking these fields can include agricultural sciences, mathematics, life sciences, physical sciences, psychology, social sciences, computer sciences and engineering. Amongst these fields are specific courses or subjects which the DHS requires students to be pursuing in their studies. As a result, when applying for this unique gov scholarship, students should look over these eligibility requirements very carefully. The DHS offers government scholarships at the undergraduate level providing the full cost of tuition and related fees while also giving a $1,000 a month stipend during the school year and an additional $5,000 during a mandatory 10 week internship. In order to be eligible for the DHS government scholarship program students must be an US citizen and working towards as bachelor’s degree. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA at a minimum while also maintaining this throughout the course of them receiving the scholarship. Applicants must be in their second or third year of studies and be available to attend the 10 week summer internship.

Another Security scholarship for students interested in US security and plan on getting into this field in college consider of the Lint Center for National Security Studies Scholarship Program. This is not a government sponsored program but deserves mentioning because it’s so closely related. It’s intent is to create awareness of national security so as to attract more young people to an occupation in national security. The center works to provide educational opportunities for those who want careers in security which also includes counterintelligence.

One of the nice things about this program is that those students who win an award will receive the financial benefits from the program for two years. Like bursaries common in other countries, students who win a DHS government scholarship will be required to work for at least one year at Homeland Security after graduation. All materials must be submitted to this program no later than January 12.

The Search for Bizarre Scholarships

Bizarre scholarships often hide in places that go unchecked by those looking for financial aid. These sorts of strange scholarships have very few applicants.

Bizarre Scholarships

Bizarre scholarships often hide in places that go unchecked by those looking for financial aid. These sorts of strange scholarships are very useful as many of them have very few applicants, increasing your chances of receiving the scholarship. However, you’ll need to have your entire arsenal with you, because some of these are a little odd. Mind you, most of the odd scholarships listed here are for specific interests, qualities, or attributes, so in many cases, you can simply be yourself! When it comes to affording school, every bit counts, so take a look at some of these, and find out if you qualify for some of these fun scholarships:

Tall Clubs International Scholarship: If you’re over 6’2”, you can apply for a scholarship from Tall Clubs International (TCI). You can get $1,000 towards expenses by simply writing an essay explaining “What Being Tall means to Me”.

Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest: If you have a gift for calling ducks, you can snag yourself between $200 and $1,500 for school. The scholarship delivers to first, second, and third place callers, so try your hand at this one and maybe you can get some extra college cash.

Potato Industry Scholarship: If you want to study potatoes, or something related, you can apply to get $2,000 toward your college education. The National Potato Council may be looking for your help…

The NCTA Help Santa Find the Perfect Real Christmas Tree: This odd scholarship can deliver between $5000 and $10000 to students ages 6 to 16. A winning essay can land a weird scholarship that can really put a dent in tuition.

Excellence In Predicting the Future Award: This one definitely falls into the bizarre scholarships category, though it may be just the title that’s a bit shocking. If you’d like to study economics and focus on the prediction market, you can snag yourself some valuable funds.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (Sammy) Award: Are you a student-athlete with a 3.2 GPA or higher? If so, you could get a $7,500 scholarship, a spot in a “milk mustache” milk commercial, and a trip to Disney World. Not bad, huh?

Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck on Prom Contest: If you feel like heading to prom in an outfit made of duct tape, you and your date could get a $3000 scholarship. So, fashion is more than just impressing your friends, these days…

Common Knowledge Challenges: Do you know a whole lot of “useless” information? You can get between $250-$3,000 from this bizarre scholarship that awards money for retaining a bunch of common knowledge.

Carnegie Mellon University Bagpipe Scholarship: This one will have quite a few applicants, but if your uncle (or anyone else) taught you how to play the bagpipes, it’s finally paying off! The award reaches $7,000 per year to those willing to major in playing the bagpipes.

American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship: Do you have some time to read an essay regarding fire sprinklers? If so, do it, then take a ten question exam. It can land you $2000 in scholarship money.

OP Loftbed Scholarship: How about one of the easiest exams you’ll ever take? This scholarship asks you to answer things like “What will you text your best friend next?”, and if you can handle that, $500 may be yours for the taking.

There’s no doubt that weird scholarships come from many places, skills, or physical features that many never imagined. While grades and community service usually play a factor, knowing how to speak “Klingon” or being incredibly short (or tall) can help you afford college without taking out expensive loans. A simple search can generate results that even guidance counselors can’t help you find. When you land one of two of these wacky scholarships in accordance with standard grants or academic scholarships, you won’t need to stress about money while studying for class. There are far more bizarre scholarships than we can list here, so stay diligent, and remember one thing…if you think of it, there’s probably a strange scholarship for it out there somewhere. You just have to find it!

Doodle 4 Google Contest for Scholarships

The 2011 Doodle 4 Google Scholarship Contest is a great method to try to find funding for your child’s education by offering a unique scholarship way to do it!

Doodle 4 Google
Doodle 4 Google

The 2011 Doodle 4 Google Scholarship Contest is a great method to try to find funding for your child’s education by offering a unique scholarship way to start thinking about what they want to do with their life. As of January 19, the 2011 Google 4 doodle theme considers the future of the entrant by asking, “What I’d like to do someday…” posing an important question, the answers to which those just starting college are not entirely sure of themselves. Starting this year students across the entire k-12 educational spectrum may submit entries. By engaging young students in this way, Doodle 4 Google contest gives children an honest chance to consider what they are interested in doing, imagining a future where they have accomplished their goals in education. Despite the relatively small pool of winners, every student participating in the program gets to work through their future career choices and dwell positively on what is to come.

Some parents may worry that thinking about college for a young child may be too much too soon, but in reality it is never too early to start thinking about your child’s future. Of course burdening your child with thinking long and hard about their future may do more harm than good, making them worry about something years away. Doodling for Google, however, is a fun and game-like way to accomplish this goal. In many ways Google’s doodling scholarship is asking children to have fun with their imagination, encouraging them to think about and then draw a picture of what they would like to do. There are no wrong answers to the question, no pressure to think deeply or worry about their choices. Maybe they want to do something as fantastic as being the first person on Mars, or something more practical like being a doctor. It offers a rare opportunity for parents to see what their children think about the future, and for a child to explore that future while being creative in the process.

As with many unusual scholarships, it is easy to get lost in the details, worrying that if your child doesn’t perform the absolute best that they won’t win one of the very few awards available nationally. Winning the Google Doodle Contest is only half of the point in this competition though. If you make it about winning or losing, you risk pushing your child into a direction which turns them off to schooling. Rather, this is about the fun involved in the process, the excitement of considering the future and its endless possibilities.

When applying to scholarships, the odds are frequently against you getting the award. This should never deter you from entering your name as a candidate, and, unlike many other corporate scholarships, Doodle 4 Google offers a chance to reflect positively on your child’s future, exploring potential outlooks. Regardless of winning, this process should hopefully encourage your student to think of a bright future, inspiring them to imagine themselves in terms of what they may become.

The national winner of the Doodle for Google Scholarship Contest will receive $15,000 towards their future college education along with a trip to Google’s New York offices, a laptop, a Wacom design tablet and a t-shirt displaying their doodle. Three other national finalists will be awarded $5,000 to be used at the school of their choice, a Wacom design tablet and a t-shirt featuring their doodle as well.

Entire k-12 schools can enter this program or just an after-school program may enter as well. Parents of students whose schools have not entered the Doodle 4 Google competition may enter their child individually. However students attending a school which has entered the contest are encouraged to participate through their individual school’s program.

The competition ends on March 16, 2011, so find out if your school is participating already and, if they are not, enter individually. The Google Doodle winners are judged and choosen by Google’s very own excutives which will take place May19th at the New York Google offices which is a yearly special occurrence. Please do take the time to apply for all those who may qualify for the Doodle 4 Google unusual scholarships.

Three Unique Beauty School Scholarships to Apply For

Many such beauty scholarships exist but there are three unique beauty school scholarships you need to be aware of. AHBAI & NCEA scholarships – ACE grant.

Beauty School Scholarships

Most people who decide to attend beauty school often do not realize that there are beauty school scholarships that are available to them to help pay for the training that you will receive. While many such beauty scholarships exist, there are three unique beauty school scholarships that you need to be aware of.

The first is the NCEA Scholarship Program. The NCEA is the National Coalition of Estheticians Manufacturers/Distributors & Associations. This program is for future Esthetician professionals, and is awarded in the amount of $1000. In order to be eligible, you must be halfway through your program, have attended classes at least 80% of the time, and have at least an 80% grade average. The deadlines for applying for this unique scholarship award occurs on the first day of March, September, June, and December of each year.

The ACE Grant, offered by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the Beauty and Barber Supply Institute (BBSI), and the Cosmetology Advancement Foundation (CAF), is actually a program that entails numerous unique scholarships available for cosmetology school. These awards include the Dream Shears Scholarship, in the amount of $500, the Sports Clips Scholarship, in the amount of $1000, the Farouk Systems USA/AACS Cosmetology Scholarship in the amount of $1000, the CND Scholarship in the amount of $500, the Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts Makeup Scholarship in the amount of $1100 and $1300, the OPI Scholarship in the amount of $500, and the Pat Goins Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000. There are several awards made for each scholarship in the program.

The AHBAI Scholarships program is administered by the AHBAI Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation. Beauty School scholarships through this program are available in the amounts of $250 and $500, and a total amount of $5000 is awarded annually. Winners of these beauty scholarships are chosen based on their extracurricular activities, their academic achievement, and their school activities. This unusual scholarship is available specifically for beauty school students.

While these are three important beauty school scholarships, it is important to realize that you need to apply for other scholarships as well. Consider everything that makes you eligible for a scholarship, and also consider attending beauty school through a traditional college or university, as opposed to a beauty school, which could make you eligible for even more unknown scholarships and financial aid.

Finally, it is important to know the different flavors of beauty school scholarships. There are special scholarships that are based on your heritage or nationality, scholarships based on need, institutional scholarships, and general scholarships. Institutional scholarships are those that are only offered to students who attend a specific school or beauty school, while general scholarships are offered regardless of the school that you will be attending, as long as it is accredited. Those that are based on need refer to the financial need of the applicant, but regardless of the type of scholarship you are applying for, you must meet all of the requirements to be eligible for the reward.

  1. You can learn more about the NCEA Scholarship Program.
  2. Information on the ACE Grant.
  3. You can get information for and apply at AHBAI scholarship program.

Easy College Scholarship Database Guidelines

When you start looking for ways to pay for your college education you will invariably start looking for a potential easy college scholarship database easy to use.

Easy College Scholarship Database Guidelines
Scholarship Database Guidelines

When you start looking for ways to pay for your college education you will invariably start looking for a potential easy college scholarship database. There are literally millions of scholarships that are available, but not all scholarships are available for all people. You can easily find the scholarships that apply to you and your situation by using an easy college scholarship database.

There are many scholarship databases to choose from. Some are free, and some charge a fee for usage. Some will allow you to fill out and submit scholarship applications directly through their website, while others will direct you to the appropriate place to submit your easy scholarship application. But in any case, you need to know how to use a scholarship database in the most effective manner.

Make absolutely sure that you use a scholarship database that has a search feature. The search feature should be advanced, and should allow you to search for easy scholarships based on specific criteria. For example, in your situation, you need scholarships that are available for people who are just entering college, who are studying in a particular field, have a certain GPA, and a certain type of disability. The database should allow you to search for all of these unique scholarships at the same time, in an effort to save time and work.

In the event that the database does not allow for specified searches in this way, where you can search for multiple criteria at one time, you will have to search for scholarships that apply to each aspect individually. Before you start your search, in either case, make a list of all of the things that actually could apply to you when it comes to winning a scholarship, or being eligible to apply for a easy scholarship. Do not forget clubs that you belong to, civic activities that you have participated in, your field of study, your grade point average, school clubs that you belong to, special talents that you have, disabilities you may have, your families status – including financial status – and other variables.

You should also have the ability to arrange your search results in a certain way. For example, you may want the search results to list the highest award amount unique scholarships first – or the scholarships that have the nearest application deadlines.

While there are numerous commercial scholarship databases, you also need to be aware of the fact that most of the larger schools maintain their own college database of scholarships that are available through the school, specifically for students at that school. Most of these easy scholarship databases are available online, free of charge. You should use an easy commercial scholarship database as well as your schools database to ensure that you don’t miss out on any unique scholarship opportunities.

Two of the most popular college scholarship databases available today are FastWeb and FinAid. Both of these sites are free to use, and are even recommended by the Financial Aid organizations. Another good database of scholarships easy to use is the College Boards Fund Finder, which is also free. To read more on FastWeb which seems to be one of the largest and quickest to use – go to college scholarship database.

Unusual Scholarships Can Be Bizarre Fun

Below you will find information about some unusual scholarships that are bizarre, unique and fun which you can apply for if you meet the requirements.

Bizarre fun unusual scholarships
Bizarre Fun Unusual Scholarships

The unusual stuff has always fascinated human beings. So it is even more fascinating for people to create something unusual. Below you will find information about some unusual scholarships that exist and that you can apply for if you want to and meet the requirements. The unusual scholarships are generally based on GPA. But the unique scholarships exist for every category.

To start out with in Pennsylvania there is a college called Bucknell University which offers the Gertrude Deppen Scholarship, and you can’t be an athlete. If you are you can’t apply. It seems that they are rewarding the scholarly type because there are not enough of them in their target scholarship criteria. This unusual scholarship is reserved for needy students who do not smoke or drink and who attend Mount Carmel High School. This scholarship rules out 99.9% of students so most don’t have a chance for it but I thought it was worth mentioning for all those who despise dumb athletes who get college scholarships to play sports with very low GPA’s. Hopefully this will make you feel better about college and those who receive scholarships while you have a hard time finding one.

David Letterman the late night talk show host has his own unique fun scholarship he awards through Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Dave states that his scholarship is for the average student who has a genius inside like him. Just make a funny video and have fun doing it and if Dave falls out of his chair in laughter then you got your scholarship. The top award is $10,000 with two smaller awards for those who made Dave almost fall off his chair.

A few colleges offer unfamiliar college scholarships for twins and/or multiples. Parents of twins got to be happy with this scholarship because they can get a two for two on this bizarre scholarship program. Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti Michigan is one such college which does offer scholarships for twins. Known as a college for teachers their twin scholarship is called The Furlotte Twins Endowed Scholarship.

Another one is the short scholarship. In order to qualify for this unfamiliar scholarship you must be shorter than 4’10”. If you are, then you can download an application online from the Little People of America Scholarship website. LPA is a non-profit organization established by Billy Barty to help out people of short stature. It goes the other way too. There are scholarships for tall people too from the Tall Clubs International which awards scholarships based on height and a few other criteria.

Another unusual scholarship for inventions is given away through the Collegiate Inventors Competition. This potentially fun and uncommon scholarship seeks to encourage graduate and undergraduate students to work on new ideas, and technological innovations. The ideas submitted together with the applications should be practical and not patented. They might not have been commercialized but should not have been submitted in the previous year. They are judged for originality, inventiveness and the potential to impact the world. You don’t have to apply alone, a team of four can participate and the amount awarded to the winning team is from $5,000 – $25,000. An unknown and different scholarship for sure!

One of the most unusual and bizarre scholarships you’ll ever hear about is the one called Duct Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest. What do you have to do in order to get this stupid or maybe just a fun scholarship? You must attend the prom dressed in duct tape. Yep, that’s all it takes!

A more serious, but still unusual scholarship is the J.D Salinger Scholarship. This smart scholarship is given to those who exhibit brilliance (of the unusual kind of course!) in the field of writing. The winner gets a 4 year $25,000 scholarship per year and has the privilege to reside in the dorm room occupied by Mr. Salinger. I wonder if that brings luck or is inspirational or something. It is kind of unusual to want to study, live, breath and write in another man’s dorm room. Of course, the competition is also unusually tough. The candidates are required to be nominated by a high school teacher, and after that they’re evaluated based on their work of ten to 15 pages on various topics whether of fiction, poetry, nonfiction or hybrid genres, but who doesn’t want to fight over a nice inspiring scholarship?

So if you think you are gifted with the special characteristics needed for some of these bizarre and unusual scholarships why not give them a try. You can stand out as well as get some money for your education. Who knows, this might be an important step on your way to etching your name in history!
